A black and white figure, stencil-like, strides towards us, discreetly carrying a gun; the styling is pure 1960's, mini dress with Pierre Cardin pattern and high boots. It is, of course, based on Diana Rigg in the classic British tv show, The Avengers. Sassy self-confidence was her metier; all this is laid over an almost psychedelic background, again a tribute to the times, when anything seemed possible. This painting is acrylic on paper and is unframed.
There is not only sadness in loss, but melancholy. It is sadness combined with a pensiveness, a brooding on the past and the future. In this painting, the figure near the burning house seems to pace helplessly, while the woman in the foreground wraps her arms around herself, drawing herself in, already resigned to the reality of the fire. Inspired by moments from the peerless films of Tarkovsky, the painting combines these figurative elements with abstract marks and shapes which lend a dream-like quality to the whole. This painting is oil on canvas with a simple black wooden frame.
